Format

The chronological format is the most commonly accepted resume format. This type of resume lists your work experience and education in reverse chronological format, beginning with the most recent. You will also list your skills.

If you are switching to a job in SEO marketing mid-career, you might consider using a functional or combination resume format. These types of resumes give more weight to your skills than to the jobs or school in which you learned them.

Functional and combination resumes include a skills summary, in which each skill is accompanied by a description of how you attained it, how it was used, or how qualified you are in using the skill.

Design

Information technology resumes can be flexible in their design. Research the company to which you are applying, and learn about its culture. A corporate job may require a more traditional design, while a startup may be attracted to a more creative resume.

Consider using infographics, especially if you are including a skills summary. An informative graphic can make your resume stand out while adding interest to your list and quantifications.

No matter the layout you choose, make sure that you leave plenty of white space around the text. This keeps your resume looking clean and readable. Also, choose an appropriate font. A standard sans-serif font such as Arial or Calibri is good for an online resume.

Photo

In the United States, including a photo with your resume is discouraged. This is due to anti-discrimination laws.

What if you are applying to a company based outside of the U.S.? Do your research, and find out what is expected of you. In some European countries, for example in Spain, it is common to include a photo with your resume.

Education

University education may not be a requirement for an SEO candidate, but a degree in a relevant field, such as computer science or marketing, can set your resume apart. Include any higher education you have received.

You may also have attended training, classes, or seminars. Or, you may have received on-the-job training. Include these experiences as well.
