Comedy is a skills-oriented profession, but past experience is also very important. For this reason, we recommend the use of a combination resume format.

The combination resume is very similar to the familiar chronological resume. It includes contact information, skills, and a reverse-chronological listing of employment and education. The skills section is expanded, however, to become a qualifications summary. This summary is more detailed and shows your skills in action, quantifying them where possible.

A functional or chronological resume format is also acceptable for a comedian resume.


How should a comedian resume look? While you want your resume to display professionalism, your line of work provides added incentive to be creative.

A few things should be true of every resume. Select an easy to read font such as Arial or Calibri; avoid unusual or fanciful fonts. Group your information into logical sections, and begin each with an informative heading, such as “Skills,” “Education,” or “Experience.” Leave ample margins around each section.

You might consider the use of an infographic. This type of graphic clearly communicates information in an engaging and memorable way. For example, you might use a graphic to illustrate cities, venues, or movies in which you’ve performed.


Generally, you should not include a photo with your resume. Due to anti-discrimination laws, the submission of an unsolicited photo could result in the rejection of your resume.

However, headshots are commonly requested in the entertainment industry. This is especially so if you are applying for a part in a movie, stage production, or television show. If a headshot is requested, don’t hesitate to include it.

A number of sections are essential to every resume, even in the funny business of comedy. Necessary resume sections include:

Comedians are often responsible for marketing themselves. This requires professional networking, understanding the logistics of hosting an event, and a social media presence. Most comedians also handle their own travel and expenses, making financial skills a must.

You should be familiar with the use of stage items such as microphones, lights, cameras, and teleprompters. You also need basic proficiency with computers and office equipment to write scripts and other material, engage with fans, and book and schedule performances.

Comedians should also have a reasonable level of health and physical fitness, as performances often require extensive travel and standing for long periods of time.

Work experience

Your performance history is a key aspect of your comedian resume. The more performances you list, the more you seem an established part of the entertainment industry.

Depending on the resume format you choose, you may also want to list all work experience from at least the past ten years. You can highlight transferable skills such as interpersonal skills and communication. You may even be able to cite a particular job as a source for your comedic material!
