Format

A chronological resume format is the most widely accepted format. It should be the only format used for corporate travel manager positions.

Begin with your contact information and skills list. Then, explain your work history and educational background in reverse-chronological order.

If applying to a travel agency, you may choose to employ a combination or functional resume format if you feel that your skills outweigh your education or job experience.

Design

How should a travel manager resume look? The design of your resume should be professional in nature. You can ensure a professional design by consulting our resume samples.

Your resume should employ a simple, easy-to-read font like Arial or Calibri. Arrange your text into sections with headings such as “Experience,” “Skills,” and “Education.” Leave ample space or margins around each section of text.

Especially when applying to an agency position, you might consider including an infographic. This infographic could succinctly describe your own travel experience (i.e., a map with pins) or highlight your accomplishments in a similar role.

Photo

It is not necessary to include a photo with your travel manager resume.

Sections of a Resume

A number of sections are of vital importance to your travel manager resume. These include:

  • Contact information
  • Skills
  • Work history
  • Education

These resume sections introduce you, your skillset, and your basic experience. You can enhance your resume with additional information when applicable. These optional sections may include but are not limited to:

  • Objective statement
  • Certifications
  • Travel history
  • Language fluency

The objective statement is used to grab the attention of your hiring manager. Certifications such as Certified Travel Associate (CTA), Certified Travel Counselor (CTC), or Certified Travel Industry Executive (CTIE) demonstrate your experience and commitment.

Fluency in a language other than English can be a real asset when working with foreign clients or booking reservations in certain lands. Your own travel experience, perhaps signified by a simple infographic, can also demonstrate an intimate understanding of the travel industry.

Resume Length

Generally, your resume should be limited to one page in length.

Travel Manager Resume Section Headings

Choose 2-3 sections. The most important for the profession.

Education, skills, and work experience are important resume sections to consider when building your travel manager resume.

Education

There are no minimum educational requirements for travel managers, but most hold a bachelor’s degree in tourism, business, or a related field.

A number of certifications are also available for those in the hospitality industry and specifically for travel agents. These can be obtained at university or online. Extensive travel experience is also a plus.

Skills

Travel managers should display a knowledge of the tourism and hospitality industries, geography, sales orientation, and computer competency. They must be able to research geographic locations and services; plan travel itineraries and book hotels, flights, rentals, and activities; manage travel documentation; identify money-saving deals; and evaluate travel service performance.

Soft skills needed include good communication and interpersonal skills, leadership ability, supervisory skills, customer service, critical thinking and problem-solving, multitasking, and teamwork. Flexibility is also ideal, as working weekends or after hours may be necessary to accommodate client needs.

Enthusiasm for travel and attention to detail are additional ideal skills. Fluency in a language other than English can also increase your chances of getting hired.

Work experience

Experience in the tourism industry is highly regarded by many agencies hiring travel managers. List all previous experience, whether or not it is related to the industry. You can use the resume job descriptions to highlight transferable skills.

Experience in travel can also be a boon. If your previous work involved travel, include this in the job description. If you have done extensive travel for pleasure, you may wish to include this in a separate section.
