Spray Painter Resume Tips and Ideas

Spray painters are skilled laborers who apply paint to walls or other objects using sophisticated machinery. Spray painters may work in residential homes or in commercial applications. Not only may walls be painted, but also objects such as vehicle chasis or appliance housings.

Depending on the type of work, spray painters may be self-employed, freelancing or running a small business, or they may work for a painting company, handyman company, property management company, or even a factory.

Spray painters must display a wide range of skills, from customer service to painting expertise. You can use our resume building tools – including resume samples and resume writing tips – to build your spray painter resume today.

While the chronological resume format is the most universally accepted, other formats, such as the functional and combination resumes, can also be used.

A chronological resume will list your contact information and skills, followed by your work experience and education in reverse-chronological order.

The functional resume, on the other hand, places the most emphasis on the qualifications summary. This type of resume introduction showcases the most relevant aspects of your experience. Write the qualifications summary in bullet point format, highlighting your achievements and your skills in action. Quantify your skills where possible. Tailor the information you include to the needs of the job you are seeking.

Complete your functional resume with a list of your skills, work history, and education. Your experience and education do not have to be in chronological order or list dates – you can place them in an order of relevancy to the position to which you are applying.

The combination resume marries the qualifications summary of the functional resume to reverse-chronological experience and education sections of the chronological resume.

Design

Your spray painter resume design should be professional in nature, no matter which resume format you choose. To achieve this, select a simple font such as Calibri and use it throughout the document. Place your information in sections and give a clear title to each. Your resume section headings may include “Qualifications,” “Skills,” “Experience,” and “Education.”

You also want to leave ample margins, or white space, around each section of text. This prevents the resume from appearing cluttered; instead, it is inviting and easy to read.

Photo

Photos are not required for spray painter resumes. In fact, in the United States, including a photo with your resume may result in the resume being rejected due to anti-discrimination laws.

Sections of a Resume

A number of sections are essential to every resume, including your spray painter resume. These include:

  • Contact information
  • Skills
  • Work history
  • Education

These sections are vital because they introduce you to your hiring manager and explain why you are qualified for the job.

Depending on the resume format you choose, you may also want to include a qualifications summary. This summary highlights your most important abilities.

You may desire to include additional sections. If you speak a language other than English, this can be a huge asset on the job. Do you have certifications, such as OSHA safety training or the use of large equipment like forklifts or scissor lifts? If so, include a certifications section in your resume. These certifications may make your resume stand out among the competition.

Resume Length

Generally, your resume should be limited to one page in length.

Spray Painter Resume Section Headings

Skills and work experience are essential to a spray painter resume. Documenting educational background is also beneficial.

Skills

Spray painters must display a wide range of skills. Most of these center around expertise in painting. A spray painter must know how to prepare the job site for painting, apply primers, level walls, remove old or peeling paint, fill and smooth holes in walls, match colors adequately, apply spray paint, understand and maintain the machinery involved, and clean tools and the work site after the painting is complete. A working knowledge of safety and personal protective equipment, especially respirators, is also essential.

Spray painters must also have good communication, customer service, and interpersonal skills, whether they work for a company or are self-employed. They must be able to discuss project requirements with clients, work well with teammates, and interact with management. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and deadline orientation are also beneficial.

Because this job can be physically demanding, spray painters must also maintain an adequate level of physical fitness, good health, and stamina.

Work experience

Most spray painter resumes highlight on-the-job training. This is often acquired early in one’s career; others are self-taught.

You can use your resume job descriptions to highlight your skills.

Education

Most spray painter resumes demonstrate a high school diploma, high school equivalents such as a general education diploma (GED), or a vocational school diploma.

Spray Painter Resume Vocabulary & Writing Tips

The words you use play a role in whether or not you will be selected for the job. How so? Today, many companies employ computer software that “reads” the resumes and assigns them a rank before they ever reach human hands. In order to score well during this process, your resume should include good resume keywords.

Where can you find these keywords? Examine the job listing, and use similar phrases in your resume. You could also look at the company’s website or think about technical terms and jargon related specifically to the job. To help you get started, we’ve compiled the following list of common spray painter resume vocabulary terms.

When your resume is complete, read and reread it to check for errors in spelling and grammar.
