Professional Resume Samples for  a  Solution Architect

Solving problems is all in a day’s work - now, you can apply that same mindset to your resume

Solution Architect Resume Tips and Ideas

Solution architects help solve business problems and projects succeed. Solution architecture, or SA, helps businesses find technology-based solutions to nagging problems. This requires the organizational skills to help see a project to completion on time and on budget.

Solution architects must demonstrate both technical and communications skills, as their duties involve defining and describing problems, projects, software, and all steps of a proposed solution. A solution architect must also be able to see the “big picture,” combining elements of business, technology, and information into a unified whole.

Your work as a solution architect may be done for a particular company in-house, or you may apply to a solution architect firm that hires out professionals to a diverse range of clients. You will, therefore, want to customize your resume to fit the needs and culture of the company to which you are applying.

Format

We recommend a chronological format for all solution architect resumes. Why? Because your education and work history are very important to getting hired in a solution architecture role. A Bachelor’s degree is generally necessary, as is a strong background and ample experience in the IT field.

Your chronological resume will list your work history and education in reverse chronological order, beginning with the most recent experience. You will also include sections for your contact information and skills.

You can use an online resume template to help you get started, or base your resume on one of our professional Solutions architect examples further down.

Design

The design of your resume should reflect your professionalism. Select an 11- to 12-point serif font such as Times New Roman, and use the same font throughout your resume.

Clearly demarcate your sections with section headings. You can set these apart by using bold or italic fonts. Make sure there are plenty of margins and white space around each section, as this affords the resume an organized appearance.

You can also use simple line borders or blocks of black, dark blue, or grey to outline or highlight sections of your resume. Avoid the use of bright colors or other distracting elements, such as images or logos.

Photo

In the United States, including a photo with your resume is not recommended. In fact, anti-discrimination laws in some areas may result in the discarding of a photo-bearing resume.

Laws in other countries differ, so do your research ahead of time if applying to a position outside of the United States. In some countries, you will be expected to submit a photo along with your resume.

Sections of a Resume

A number of sections are considered vital to your solution architect resume. These include:

  • Contact information
  • Resume objective
  • Skills
  • Work experience
  • Education

These elements will give your hiring manager an overview of your abilities and the progression of your career, as well as a means of getting in touch with you.

Depending on your personal circumstances and the nature of the job to which you are applying, you may also wish to include additional sections, such as:

  • Qualifications summary
  • Language proficiency
  • Honors/Awards
  • Portfolio

A qualifications summary includes more detail than a simple skills list, demonstrating your skills in action. Listing any honors and awards you have received for your work also bodes well for your abilities. You may choose to include a brief portfolio of successful projects, perhaps including links to relevant websites. Finally, fluency in a language other than English can be a great asset on the job. This is especially so if clients or coworkers speak this language.

Resume Length

Generally, your resume should be one page in length, designed to fit a portrait-oriented, 8.5 by 11-inch letter-sized sheet of paper. If a long work history or portfolio necessitates it, you can extend your resume to two pages, but no more.

If printing your resume, select a high-quality, resume-grade paper.

Solution Architect Resume Section Headings

Your skills, education, and work history are the resume sections that most succinctly demonstrate your ability to do your job well.

Skills

Your resume should demonstrate familiarity with basic office equipment and computer programs. You should also have a high degree of technical literacy, astute knowledge of current software, hardware, and computer applications. This includes an understanding and working usage of Unified Modeling Language as well as enterprise architecture frameworks such as FEAF, ToGAG, and DoDAF.

You should also highlight “soft skills,” including teamwork, leadership, problem-solving ability, time management, and good communication. You should be able to analyze projects, giving heed to both the “big picture” and minute details.

Education

Many solution architects hold a bachelor’s degree in a field such as Computer science, information technology, or business management. List your bachelor’s degree, as well as any additional degrees or certifications to which you have attained.

Work experience

Solution architects should be able to demonstrate a significant amount of work experience in the IT field. Many SAs start out as software developers before transitioning into solution architecture. In your job descriptions, detail your responsibilities, especially in regards to problem-solving, software and technology use, and software development.
