Resident assistants are on-site staff that do just as their job title implies – they supervise and assist the residents of a housing facility. Locations requiring resident assistants vary greatly. The duties of a resident assistant include enforcing regulations, penalizing breaches of these regulations, counseling, and helping residents with any problems or limitations they may have.

You can use a number of resume formats depending on your unique history. The most commonly accepted resume format is the chronological resume. This type of resume lists your contact information and skills, followed by your work history and educational background in reverse chronological order.

A variation of this is the combination resume. It replaces the skills list with a qualifications summary. The qualifications summary describes skills in detail, quantifying results where possible. This type of resume is good if you are promoting skills that aren’t demonstrated in your work history.

After a long break from employment, some people select a functional resume. Its primary feature is the qualifications summary. Work and education listings may or may not include dates, so the most relevant experience can be listed near the top.


A key consideration when designing any resume is that it be professional in appearance. Select a single standard font and use it throughout the document. Use 11 or 12-point font. Group your information into sections, and identify each with a heading. Use bold or italic fonts to highlight the headings.

In order for your resume to appear well-organized, make sure there are plenty of margins, or white space, surrounding your text. Finally, avoid the use of distracting elements such as images or bright colors.


Photos should not be included with resumes submitted in the United States unless specifically asked to do so. In fact, an unsolicited photo could result in the rejection of your resume due to anti-discrimination laws.

Sections of a Resume

The following four sections make up the “backbone” of your resume:

  • Education

These sections allow your hiring manager to get in touch with you, inform him or her of what you are capable of, and provide a basic understanding of your background.

Your resume is not limited to these sections, however. Consider whether the following would be appropriate for your resident assistant resume:

Do you have additional certifications? Certifications include wide and varied subject matter, from CPR to computer coding. If you think a certification is relevant to your prospective job, be sure to include it.

Resume Length

Your resume should be one page in length. It should fit on standard letter-sized 8.5 by 11-inch paper. Print your resume on high-quality business or resume-grade paper.

Skills, work history, and education are important to every resume. Even when experience or training is not required, your resume can use these sections to demonstrate your abilities.


Your skills are the most important aspect of your resident assistant resume. You should demonstrate good communication and interpersonal skills, leadership ability, and organizational skills.

Work experience

You can use your work history to demonstrate transferable skills, even if your previous experience was unrelated to residence assistance. Look for opportunities to describe your skills in action.

You can also include volunteer work, such as camp counseling, in which you oversaw a group of people.


Specific education may not be required, but it can boost your credentials. If a high school diploma or its equivalent represents your highest level of education, include it. If you completed any college degrees, include these also. Medical, psychology, or social work degrees especially lend themselves to resident assistant credentials.
