Production Assistant Resume Tips and Ideas

Do you have dreams of working in the film, stage, or television industry? Working as a production assistant is a good place to start. Production assistants provide support to directors, writers, producers, and the cast. Production assitants can also work for companies producing other performances or events, including fashion shows, musical concerts, and stage plays.

What duties does production assistance involve? You may be asked to run errands, do paperwork, help with set construction, transport items, keep the set clean, or organize the wardrobe. You may also be involved with cameras, soundboards, computers, or other electronic equipment.

Your production assistant resume should demonstrate good communication, organization, and time management skills. You can create the ideal production assistant resume using the following expert tips and resume samples.

Format

The most commonly accepted resume format in any industry is the chronological resume. This resume format lists your contact information and skills, followed by a reverse-chronological listing of your work and educational background. Start with the most recent experience, and work your way back.

The combination resume format is a variation on the chronological resume. It replaces the skills list with a qualifications summary. This summary goes into detail about each skill, showing how you have used it. Accomplishments are quantified where possible.

Finally, you may choose to use a functional resume. This format, too, focuses on skills with a qualifications summary. However, dates are optional for the work and education sections, allowing you to list the most relevant experience first.

Design

When designing your production assistant resume, keep in mind that your resume should have a professional appearance. Avoid bright colors or images. You can use borders or blocks of muted colors.

Select a single font, such as Arial or Calibri, and use it throughout the document. Organize your information into sections, and write a descriptive heading for each. You can make your headings stand out using a bold or italic font. Finally, leave plenty of white space around each section of the text.

Photo

In the United States, you should not include a photo with your production assistant resume. You’re not applying for an on-camera role, so a headshot is not required.

If the company to which you are applying operates outside the U.S., research common resume practices in that land.

Sections of a Resume

Your production assistant resume, like all resumes, should include the following sections:

  • Contact information
  • Skills
  • Work history
  • Education

These sections will give your hiring manager an idea of who you are and what work you are capable of doing. Your resume, however, is not limited to these basic sections. Depending on your background, you may wish to include additional sections that add to your value as an employee. Consider:

  • Objective statement
  • Qualifications summary
  • Certifications
  • Language proficiency

Your objective statement can include why you want the job, why you are the ideal candidate, and your career goals. The qualifications summary, as already discussed, elaborates on your skillset. Do you have any certifications? Anything from CPR to scuba diving might be of use to a movie studio, and should, therefore, be listed. Do you speak a language other than English? This can be a real asset in a diverse work environment or when filming abroad.

Resume Length

Your resume should generally not exceed one page in length. Design it to be printed on 8.5 by 11-inch paper. When printing your resume, select a high-grade resume or business paper.

Production Assistant Resume Section Headings

Since formal education is not required, focus your resume on your skills, certifications, and work history. Be sure, however, to list your educational background as well.

Skills

As a production assistant, you will be working closely with a large team of people. You will also be manipulating set and prop objects. Your skills list should include teamwork, communication, organizational skills, and time management. Manual dexterity and physical stamina are also essential in a production assistant resume skills section.

Certifications & courses

Formal education is generally not required for production assistant roles, but certifications can give you a “leg up” over your competition. A driver’s license is often required for running errands or transporting items. CPR or other medical certifications make you an asset in case of emergency or when dangerous stunts are required. Even unusual certifications, such as scuba diving, can be of use when filming in certain locales.

Work experience

Include your work history, even if it is unrelated to the film industry. Use the job descriptions to highlight transferable skills, such as communication, teamwork, reliability, time management, and organization.

Production Assistant Resume Vocabulary & Writing Tips

Today, computerized systems often “read” your resume before it reaches human hands. Why? The software analyzes and ranks candidates in terms of viability for the job.

To rank well in this software gambit, it is important that you include essential keywords in your resume. Such keywords are often a part of the employer’s job listing or description. We’ve also included the following keywords drawn from other successful production assistant resumes.
