Format

A chronological resume format is recommended for orderly resumes, as it is the most commonly accepted resume type across all fields – including the medical field.

The chronological resume consists of a number of resume sections. First, you will list your contact information and skills. Then, you will include a reverse-chronological listing of your work experience and education. Begin with the most recent experiences and work your way back.

You may also choose to use a combination resume format. This type of resume replaces the skills list of the chronological resume with the more comprehensive qualifications summary.

Generally, functional resume formats are not recommended for orderlies.

Design

How should an orderly resume look? Your focus should be on presenting a professional impression. How can you do so?

One easy way is by using one of our online resume templates. Or, you can create your own in several easy steps.

First, select your font. Choose an easy to read font. We recommend simple sans-serif fonts such as Arial or Calibri. Avoid fancy or unusual fonts, as these can be difficult to read. Use the same font throughout the document. Size your font at 11 or 12 points for the body text.

Next, organize your information into logical sections. Begin each with a resume section heading such as “Experience,” “Education,” or “Skills.” You can use a bold or italic font or make the heading slightly larger than the rest of the text in order to highlight it.

Finally, leave ample white space or margin around your text. This maintains a clean and uncluttered appearance.

Photo

In the United States, you should not include a photograph with your orderly resume unless you are specifically asked to do so. Due to anti-discrimination laws, including an unsolicited resume photo could result in the rejection of your resume.

Laws and practices differ in other countries. For example, a photo is expected in some European nations. If applying to a position outside of the United States, research resume practices in that land.

Education

Formal education may or may not be required for employment as an orderly. Most orderly resumes display a high school diploma or an associate’s degree. CNA certification is required in some states.

Skills

A good bedside manner is essential. In dealing with patients, orderlies should be patient, kind, gentle, and willing to listen. Orderlies should also display good communication skills when interacting with the nursing staff. Math skills and first aid, such as CPR and the Heimlich maneuver, are also needed.

Orderlies must know how to use medical equipment to accurately measure vital signs such as temperature, blood pressure, and pulse. The use of basic cleaning equipment is also required. The orderly should be attentive to carry out all assigned duties. Other necessary soft skills include attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and teamwork.

Good health and physical stamina are also essential, as orderlies may be required to help lift patients or equipment and spend long shifts on their feet.

Work experience

Orderlies often receive on-the-job training until they are able to perform the necessary tasks without supervision. Previous medical experience is ideal. All work experience from at least the past ten years should be included on your resume.
