If you have a previous volunteer or paid experience in the library or a similar institution, you should choose a reverse chronological resume format. You will list your contact information and skills followed by a listing of your work history – beginning with the most recent – and your educational background.

If you have no previous experience in the field, then a combination resume format may be for you. The combination resume replaces the skills list with a qualifications summary. Here, you can draw attention to your communication skills, computer proficiencies, and interest in books.


Because the library sciences are closely linked to the literary field, you will want to design a professional-looking resume. You can do this by selecting a serif font such as Arial or Calibri. Use the same font throughout the document, sized 11 to 12-point.

Organize your information into sections, and write a clear header at the top of each. You can highlight the heading using a bold or italic font. Leave plenty of white space, or margins, around each section of text.
