Freight Associate Resume Tips and Ideas

Freight associates work in warehouse environments throughout diverse industries. They are charged with the logistics and organization of the warehouse – monitoring shipping, receiving, usage of available space, and damaged goods. They may also work in stock rooms of stores and assist in inventory-related tasks in the store itself, such as the placement of signs and visuals. Many freight associates work the night shift to ensure that the store is well stocked and organized before customers arrive each morning.

You can give your career a boost when you update or create your freight associate resume. The process is simple when you use our helpful resume writing tips and compare your resume to our professional resume samples.

Format

A chronological resume format is recommended for freight associates. This is the most commonly accepted type of resume. You will begin your chronological resume by listing your contact information and your most relevant skills. Then, list your work experience and education in reverse-chronological order.

You may also choose to use a combination resume format. This type of resume is very similar to the chronological format. The primary difference is that the skills list is replaced by the more detailed qualifications summary.

Because a background in merchandising is an important resume component, functional resume formats are not recommended for freight associates.

Design

How should a freight associate resume look? Your resume should have a professional design. You can easily achieve this by consulting a resume sample or using an online resume template.

First, choose your font. Do not use a fancy or unusual font, as these can be difficult to read. We suggest a simple font such as Arial or Calibri. Size your text to eleven or twelve points and use the same font throughout the resume.

Next, organize your information. Use section headings such as “Experience,” “Skills,” and “Education.” Finally, leave plenty of white space or margins around your text.

Also, avoid the use of images or bright colors, as these can distract from the purpose of your resume.

Photo

In the United States, providing a photo with your resume is not recommended. Unsolicited resume photos can result in the rejection of your resume due to anti-discrimination laws.

If you will be working outside of the United States, research resume practices in the country in question. Standards differ from place to place.

Sections of a Resume

Certain sections are vital to the success of every resume, including your freight associate resume. These include:

  • Contact information
  • Skills
  • Work history
  • Education

These sections provide the hiring manager with basic information about you and your background, allowing him or her to decide whether you will be a good fit for the job. You may be able to increase the value of your resume by including one or more optional sections. These include but are not limited to:

  • Objective statement
  • Qualifications summary
  • Language fluency
  • Honors and awards

How can these sections help you? The objective statement is used to capture the reader’s attention. The qualifications summary provides additional information about your skills. Do you speak a language other than English? This can be a huge asset in the workplace and should always be included in your resume. Have you received any honors or awards for your work, such as perfect attendance or employee of the month recognition? These should also be included, as they prove you have a good work ethic.

Resume Length

Generally, your resume should be limited to one page in length.

Freight Associate Resume Section Headings

Skills and experience are among the most important sections of your freight associate resume.

Skills

Freight associates should understand and be able to perform various aspects of merchandising and logistics. This includes receiving and storing goods, informing management of incoming shipments or product depletion, identifying and removing damaged products, making the most of available storage space, completing paperwork, moving store fixtures, and setting up signs, displays, or other advertising media.

Computer competency is often required. Soft skills should include good organization, quick thinking, and problem-solving ability.

Working as a freight associate can be a physically demanding job. It often requires full shifts on your feet and the ability to lift items weighing up to or over 60 pounds. Good health and stamina will aid in getting and retaining a freight associate job.

Work experience

Previous experience in merchandising is ideal. This could include education or on-the-job training. Merchandising experience includes any jobs where you were tasked with stocking shelves, taking inventory, or setting up advertising displays.

Customer service experience is also in demand. Use your resume job descriptions to highlight previous experience in which you performed any of the above tasks.
