There are two compelling reasons for using a chronological resume format. First, it is the most widely accepted resume type in the corporate sector. It is what your hiring manager will expect to see, helping them find the information they seek easily and with no surprises.

Second, your educational background is an essential factor in the hiring process. The reverse-chronological listing of your work history and education places emphasis on the proper resume sections.

Combination and functional resume formats are not recommended.


When designing your financial advisor resume, your foremost concern should be putting forth a professional appearance. After all, your resume is your first impression on your prospective employer.

You can do this by customizing an online resume template or basing your design on one of our examples. Select a serif font, such as Arial, and use the same 11 or 12-point font throughout the document.

Format your resume to be printed on 8.5 by 11-inch paper. Select a high grade business or resume paper made from linen or cotton.

Your education and work experience are the key sections of your financial advisor resume.


A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, or a related field such as economics or accounting, is required in order to become a financial advisor. List this as well as any higher degrees on your resume.

Licensure is required in some areas. You may have also received additional training, continuing education credits, or certifications. These should also be featured on your resume, either in the education section or in a separate section.

Work experience

What if you are fresh out of school and have little work experience? That’s okay. List any experience that you do have, focusing on skills that are transferable from one job to another. These include attention to detail, good communication, customer service, computer and office equipment skills, and budgeting. Volunteer experience can also be included in order to pad this section.


In addition to familiarity with financial products and principles, you should be able to use computers and office equipment, interact well with clients, create detailed plans, and analyze data with great attention to detail.
