Elementary School Teacher Resume Tips and Ideas

Your teaching resume must demonstrate a passion for learning and a dedication to teaching. No matter your background, your elementary school teacher resume should display a wide range of abilities, from interpersonal to technical skills.

Your resume should also include the education and licensing required of teachers in your area. If you have specialized in a specific type of elementary education, you can use your resume to demonstrate this as well.

Below, we’ve provided a number of tips to help you craft a professional elementary school teacher resume. You can also view our resume examples for additional guidance.

Format

A chronological resume format is highly recommended, as this format displays your education and work history as a teacher. Listing these attributes in reverse chronological order will give the hiring manager a clear picture of your professional goals.

In some instances, you may choose to employ a combination resume format. This type of resume begins with a skills or qualifications summary, giving detailed examples of each skill. It is then followed by a reverse chronological listing of your education and work history.

Some circumstances that would facilitate the use of a combination resume include:

  • A professional Musician seeking employment as a music teacher
  • A professional or college Athlete seeking a position as a physical education teacher
  • An individual seeking employment as a special education teacher, who has experience caring for handicapped family members
  • An Industrial Chemist who would like to be employed as a science teacher

A functional resume format is not appropriate for a teaching resume, as it does not give due attention to employment history and educational background.

Design

Before you design your resume, research the culture of the institution to which you are applying. This may have a bearing on your design. For example, a resume for an elementary art teacher at a Montessori school might benefit from a creative resume, while a longstanding private elementary school might prefer a more austere and classic design.

Consider your page layout. Your sections should have clear headings, and ample white space should surround each body of text. Your core competencies should be readily accessible.

Images are not advised, but depending on the specifics of the job, a tasteful infographic could be used.

Photo

Within the United States, it is not advisable to include a photo with your resume. If attempting to fulfill a vacancy in another country, research recruiting regulations in that land. Photographs are expected in some nations.

Sections of a Resume

Your resume may differ depending on the specifics of your past and the position to which you are applying, but every teaching resume should include the following sections:

  • Contact information
  • Objective statement
  • Work experience
  • Education
  • Core competencies (skills)

You may also wish to include:

  • Honors and awards
  • Languages
  • Continuing education
  • Technical skills

The inclusion of honors and awards demonstrates the fact that you excel in your field. If you are fluent in a language other than English, this too can be an asset, as it will allow you to interact with English-learner students and perhaps include language lessons in your curriculum.

Continuing education, including classes, seminars, and workshops, further demonstrates your commitment to lifelong learning. Finally, technology is increasingly a part of life in the classroom. If you can exemplify the ability to use computers, tablets, projectors, smart boards, and other items, your value as an elementary school educator grows.

Resume Length

Generally, it is best to keep your resume to one page in length. This is especially so if you are newly entering the teaching field. If your background is lengthy or you would like to provide portfolio material specific to your teaching specialization, it is acceptable to extend the resume to two pages.

If printed, your resume should fit on letter-size, 8.5 by 11-inch paper, portrait orientation. Make sure you select a high grade resume paper for printing.

Elementary School Teacher Resume Section Headings

The field of education is an ever-changing one. What remains constant, however, are the most important sections of your elementary teacher resume.

Education

In most places, a teaching license or teaching credential is required in order to legally work as a teacher. In the United States, a Bachelor’s Degree is generally a prerequisite. You may also be asked to pass a written exam.

For this reason, it is important to list your educational background on your elementary school teacher resume. You may have gotten a degree in education, or you may have attained an add-on certificate to an unrelated field of study.

Work experience

Your work experience as a teacher will lend itself to your ability to do your job well. What, though, if you are entering the field right out of school and do not yet possess professional teaching experience?

Don’t worry. List positions—even unpaid, voluntary positions—that require similar abilities. These may include tutoring, coaching, Sunday school, or working at a summer camp. You can also include student teaching positions required to complete your university coursework.

Skills

Core competencies are skills needed to be successful at your job. This term is commonly used in education, and it should be present on your resume.

Important core competencies for teachers include interacting well with students, creating a safe learning environment, preparing lesson plans, identifying student needs, and collaboration.

Elementary School Teacher Resume Vocabulary & Writing Tips

Vocabulary words aren’t just for your students; they are important to an outstanding resume as well. Think about the requirements of the position to which you are applying, and what words would best describe these. Look for keywords in the job listing. Use these to your advantage.
