Their job may include cleaning building interiors, removing debris from construction sites, keeping workspaces neat and tidy, and maintaining facilities. Common tasks involved in cleaning are janitorial functions such as taking out the trash, vaccuuming, sweeping, mopping, washing windows, shining furniture and fixtures, and disinfecting bathroom, kitchens, laboratories, or other areas.

Cleaners work in a variety of industries. They may work outdoors, clearing construction debris. They may work in standard offices, medical offices, stadiums and arenas, hotels, restaurants, or other buildings. Some cleaners work in a residential setting. They may be employed directly by a business or property, by a cleaning agency, or they may be self-employed.

Format

As a cleaner, you may choose from any of the generally accepted resume formats. A chronological resume format is the most widely recognized. In addition to your contact information and skills section, this resume will list your work and educational history in reverse-chronological order.

You may choose to use a functional resume format, which places an increased emphasis on your skills. The skills section will be replaced by a qualifications summary. Dates and chronological order are not important to the work and education sections. Instead, you can list your experience in order of relevance. This type of resume is especially suited to those who have been out of the workforce for some time.

A third option is the combination resume format. This type of resume combines the reverse-chronological listings of the chronological resume with the qualification summary of the functional resume.

Design

How should a cleaner resume look? Overall, you want your resume to be professional in appearance. How so?

First, select your font. It should be 11 to 12-point and easy to read. Avoid fancy or unusual fonts. We suggest Arial or Calibri.

Next, arrange your information into sections under headings such as “Skills,” “Qualifications,” “Experience,” and “Education.” You can highlight the headings by using a bold font or a slightly larger font. You can also use borders or dividers, but avoid distracting elements such as logos or bright colors. Finally, leave ample white space, or margins, around your text.

Photo

Generally, you should not include a photo with your cleaner resume. In the United States, doing so can result in the rejection of your resume due to anti-discrimination laws. If applying outside of the United States, research resume practices common to that country.

Sections of a Resume

Your resume should be divided into a number of standard sections. These sections give your potential employer basic information about you, such as how to contact you, what you are able to do, and how you gained this experience. These sections include:

You may choose to include a number of additional sections, where applicable, such as:

The qualifications summary describes your skills in detail, for example, quantifying your work. You may also have certifications that indicate specific competencies, increasing your value as an employee. For example, you may have received OSHA safety training as a disaster site worker or in bloodborne pathogens, health hazard awareness, industrial hygiene, or the like. If so, include these on your cleaner resume.

Do you speak a language other than English? Be sure to include it on your resume. Many employers consider language fluency to be a valuable skill.

Necessary skills may vary depending on the type of cleaning you are doing. General cleaning often involves emptying trash cans and replacing bags or bin liners; sanitizing sinks, toilets, and floors in restrooms; restocking cleaning supplies, hand soap, and paper products; vacuuming carpets; mopping floors; dusting surfaces; and spot cleaning areas as needed.

Cleaners should have a working knowledge of cleaning tools such as industrial vacuum cleaners. Some cleaners may be required to operate electric mops, floor buffers, carpet steamers, dishwashers, laundry washers and dryers, or other equipment.

A number of “soft skills” aid in the success of a cleaner. These include reliability, dependability, the ability to work independently, and honesty. Cleaners should also maintain a reasonable degree of physical fitness, as the job may require the cleaner to be on his or her feet for the duration of a shift or to lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds.

You may also need to have a flexible schedule. Many cleaners work nights or weekends, cleaning businesses when customers and workers are not present.

Work experience

No formal education is required for cleaners, and much training occurs on-the-job. Previous experience in cleaning is ideal. Many employers look for employees with at least one year of experience in the cleaning industry. You may be able to highlight cleaning tasks performed in other job types.
