A chronological resume is the most commonly accepted resume format in the business world. You will want to employ this format for your CEO resume.

A chronological resume lists your work history and education in reverse chronological order. It also reserves space for your contact information, objective statement, and skills list, usually near the beginning of the document.

Design

It is important that your CEO resume reflects your status as a business professional. You can achieve this by starting with an appealing online resume template and customizing it to fit your needs.

Use an 11 or 12-point font such as Arial. Your resume sections should be clearly marked with headers. You can draw attention to the headers by making them slightly larger than the body text or by putting them in a bold or italic font. Leave plenty of margins, or white space, around each section of text. This helps the resume to appear organized and uncluttered.

Photo

In the United States, it is not necessary to include a photo with your CEO resume. In fact, doing so when not specifically requested may result in the rejection of your resume.

If applying to the position of CEO of a company based outside the United States, research what practices are common regarding resume photos in that country. In certain European countries, for example, resume photos are commonplace.

Sections of a Resume

A number of resume sections are a vital part of your CEO resume. They allow you to be contacted, explain your career goals, and enumerate your skills and background. These sections include:

  • Contact information
  • Objective statement
  • Skills
  • Work history
  • Education

You may also wish to include additional resume sections to help set your resume apart from the competition, such as:

  • Qualifications summary
  • Language fluency
  • Honors and awards
  • Continuing education, conferences, and seminars

When you replace your skills list with a qualifications summary, you demonstrate your skills in action. This type of summary is especially useful if you can quantify your skills, stating growth percents, budget savings, customer or client numbers, and the like.

Fluency in a language other than English can be a real asset in today’s diverse global marketplace. If you speak another tongue, be sure to include it. Also include any awards or honors that you have received, conferences and seminars you have attended, and any continuing education you have pursued or are pursuing. These elements indicate that you are good at what you do and committed to expanding your skillset.

Resume Length

Your resume should not exceed two pages in length; a resume of one page is also acceptable.

Design your resume to be printed on 8.5 by 11-inch letter sized paper. Select a high grade resume or business paper. Textured linen or cotton papers in ivory or off-white can make a truly professional statement.

CEO Resume Section Headings

Next, you should turn your attention to the minutiae of your resume sections.

Objective

Your objective statement is one to two lines of opportunity. The first item on your resume, your objective statement should not just tell your reader that you want to be the CEO. It should provide a vision and direction; what you can offer to the company.

Education

The majority of successful CEO resumes show that the applicant has attained at least a Bachelor’s Degree in Business. Other related fields such as finance may also be acceptable. Also, include any other degrees obtained or specialized training completed. This includes continuing education courses.

Work experience

Your professional background is a very important factor. How many years of experience do you have? How long have you worked for this company or in this industry? Does your history show career growth or that you have been climbing the career ladder?

List your work in reverse chronological order. Use your job descriptions to highlight skills that make you an ideal candidate for the job at hand. These include problem-solving skills, the ability to work well under pressure, leadership potential, good communication, and adequate business planning.

CEO Resume Vocabulary & Writing Tips

If applying to a new company, your resume acts as your first impression. If applying to a position within your current company, your resume must be persuasive as to why you should be the one to move up the corporate ladder. Either way, you want to state your case the right way.

Keywords can help you to do this. Look for keywords in the job description or on the company website. We’ve included a few common phrases used in successful CEO resumes to help you get started.

After you write your resume, proofread it carefully. Nothing can hinder your credibility faster than a misspelled word or forgotten comma.
