Application Developer Resume Tips and Ideas

Your favorite games and smartphone applications were created by app developers. Developers may work as freelancers, for specific businesses, or for an app development firm. They design, develop, create, and code functional applications.

App developers must be able to communicate with clients to gain an understanding of their expectations and requirements. They must also have the technical skills to design app prototypes, write code, test the apps, and debug existing apps.

Would you like to enter or expand your career in the exciting field of app development? Your next career move is closer than you may think when you employ our expert resume writing tips and professional resume samples.

Format

The chronological resume format is typically recommended for all professional careers, including app developers. This resume format begins with your contact information and a resume skills list. This is followed by a reverse-chronological listing of your work experience and education.

Combination resumes can be used to highlight skills and accomplishments, but functional resume formats are not recommended for app developers.

Design

How should an app developer resume look? On the basic level, your resume should reflect a professional appearance. You can achieve this by using an online resume template, but you can also use this as an opportunity to show off your computer design skills. Developing a crisp, clean template unique to your resume could get your hiring manager’s attention.

When creating your resume, select a simple font such as Arial or Calibri and use it throughout the document. Organize your text into sections, and title each one clearly. Leave ample margins around each section of text to ensure easy readability.

Infographics may also be considered for IT resumes. A concise graphic depiction of your skills or successful apps on which you’ve worked could win you the job.

Photo

In the United States, resume photos are neither required nor expected. In fact, due to anti-discrimination laws, including an unsolicited photo could result in the rejection of your resume.

If you will be working overseas, research the resume practices common to that country. In some European countries, for example, including a photo with your resume is expected.

Sections of a Resume

Every professional resume, including your app developer resume, should include the following sections:

  • Contact information
  • Objective statement
  • Skills
  • Work experience
  • Education

These sections introduce you to your potential employer. The resume objective statement, in particular, can be used to grab the attention of your hiring manager.

You can also create other optional sections to increase the appeal of your resume. These may include but are not limited to:

  • Certifications
  • Honors and awards
  • Hobbies
  • Project portfolio
  • Language fluency

How can these sections help you? Certifications in app development, graphic design, typing, or other computer science specialties can elevate your skillset. Honors and awards received (i.e., Editor’s Choice endorsements, etc.) prove the quality of your work. Relevant hobbies could help pad your level of experience, especially if you are new to the field. Have you created an app or another computer program in your spare time? Then you should include it on your resume.

If you’ve worked with a number of successful app projects, you can include these in a brief portfolio. An infographic consisting of recognizable app icons may be more attention-getting than a simple list.

Finally, fluency in a language other than English can be an asset in diverse workplaces or even when translating and launching the app in another country.

Resume Length

Generally, your resume should be one page in length. If you include a brief portfolio, you may need to extend it to two pages.

Application Developer Resume Section Headings

Your technical skills, computer science education, and IT experience are important aspects of your app developer resume.

Skills

Technical skills such as programming, writing code, and software design are necessary skills. You should be familiar with all aspects of app design, development, testing, debugging, and updating.

The app developer also needs a host of “soft skills”, those qualities that lie outside the realm of technical education. App developers should be creative, have good time management skills, and be able to cooperate as part of a team. They should also have excellent communication skills, as they will need to interact with clients to determine their application needs. App developers may also be required to present material in front of an audience.

Troubleshooting and attention to detail are also necessary.

Education

Successful app developer candidates typically demonstrate at least an associate’s degree in computer science, information technology, graphic design, or a related field. Bachelor’s degrees are ideal.

A mobile app developer certification can also help get your application noticed. These include but are not limited to Google’s Associate Android Developer, GIAC’s Mobile Device Security Analyst, Salesforce’s Certified Platform App Builder, and Microsoft’s MCSD App Builder and MTA Developer certifications.

Work experience

Many employers look for candidates with work experience in creating customer-facing apps. Others are willing to offer app development training to candidates with a background in IT networking or engineering.

Remember, too, that your experience in app development may not be limited to your secular work. If you have created apps as a hobby, include this in a separate section of your resume.

Application Developer Resume Vocabulary & Writing Tips

You work in the computer science field, so it should come as no surprise to realize that your resume will likely be analyzed by a computer program before it reaches human hands. You also understand the importance of keywording. Now, you can put that knowledge to work in your resume.

Examine the job listing for potential resume keywords. You can also look for keywords on the company’s website. To help you get started, we’ve compiled the following list of common app developer resume vocabulary terms.

Don’t forget to proofread your resume carefully before submitting it. Simple mistakes could cause an employer to pass you up.
