Resume Length

One page, letter size, 8.5 by 11 inches


The chronological resume format is the most commonly recognized and accepted resume type within the academic community. This is because of this format’s emphasis on education.

Begin your chronological resume with your contact information, a resume objective statement, and a resume skills list. Then, list your work experience and educational background in reverse-chronological order. Other resume sections may also be included.

Functional and combination resume formats are not recommended for academic resumes.


Academic careers are highly respected. Therefore, your resume design should reflect your professionalism. How can you do this?

Select a simple font such as Arial or Calibri and use it throughout the document. Your text should be 11 to 12 points. Organize your text into sections, and label each with a definite header. You can make the headers slightly larger than the body text. You can also use bold or italic text styles to draw attention to the headers or to other important information.

Leave ample margins around each section of the text, as this will afford your resume a clean and neat appearance.

Generally, you should not include a photo with your academic resume. In the United States, an unsolicited photo may result in the rejection of your resume due to anti-discrimination laws.
